Lined with gold pen and filled with a mix of oil pastel and colored pencil, there is something of a peaceful beauty in this piece. Maybe it’s the gold eye lashes, or perhaps the center of her forehead (where I imagine her unicorn horn to once have been). Encircled with both gold and silver, this guy was an absolute delight to paint and draw. Quintessential to this area alongside their cousins the nectarine (my absolute favorite fruit) and the plumb (my second favorite), I love playing with underlayers of yellows and reds, blending them wet or dry into full bodied, fuzzy skinned fruit. I write down things that bring on heaps of anxiety and as I paint beautiful, colorful swatches of rainbows over the words, I “paint over” these things that cause me so much grief and worry, and I hang them where I can see them - in my classroom, my home wherever…not as a reminder of the things that bring me worry, but a reminder that it is all part of the process…it’s all temporary and that beautiful things come out of the madness.
